London is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, and understandably so. Not only is it often the starting point for many European adventures, it’s also the perfect place to experience a blend of timeless charm and modern marvels. From centuries-old landmarks to trendy neighborhoods, England’s capital offers more experiences than you could possibly fit in a single visit. But if you only have one day in London, you can still experience many of the highlights that make the city so special.
I spent 24 hours in London myself back in October of 2025. While this itinerary follows the exact 24 hours I spent exploring London with my parents, it also doubles as a practical guide for a first-time visitor who is looking to make the most of a single day in the city.
Where to Stay:
I have two hotel recommendations that are both close to Buckingham Palace. Of course, there are plenty of incredible hotels in London, but these are two that I would confidently recommend to most clients:
For a Michelin-key hotel experience without the thousand-dollar price tag, I highly recommend the Flemings Mayfair. This gorgeous, design-forward hotel is comprised of thirteen townhouses that date from 1734 (but certainly don’t look it). My clients get lots of free perks with their stay, including a free one-way Heathrow transfer, daily breakfast for two, a $50 food and beverage credit, room upgrades, and early/late checkout.
For an equally gorgeous stay at a slightly lower price point, I love The Rubens at the Palace. This hotel is designed to make you feel like royalty – what’s not to love? My clients get perks with their stay like daily breakfast for two, a 40 pound food and beverage credit, room upgrades, and early/late checkout.
What to See & Do:
There are several sights that you simply can’t leave London without seeing, and one of my favorites is Tower Bridge. You can take in the views of the bridge from the side of the River Thames, or you can walk across the bridge to get some incredible pictures. If you have time, you can visit the Tower of London Museum, or you can just pay a visit to the gift shop.
After you’ve explored Tower Bridge you’ll be right next to the perfect lunch spot, Coppa Club. This gorgeous restaurant is situated right on the river and has outdoor igloo seating year-round. You can enjoy a delicious lunch and some drinks in your very own igloo before continuing on with your day.
From Coppa Club you can head down join a river cruise (Tower Bridge to Westminster) to learn a bit more about London as you check out more of this iconic city. You can choose to book a one-way ticket or round trip, depending on your plans for the day. If you take the cruise from Tower Bridge, you can get off near another London staple, Big Ben.
Although there are red telephone booths all over London, if you want to get the iconic Instagram photo, you’ll want to head to this specific one near Big Ben. You will almost certainly have to wait in a line, but whatever – it moves pretty quick and it’s totally worth it!
Just a short walk away is the gorgeous Westminster Abbey, which you may recognize from it’s front facade but is just as impressive from the side. Note that the last entry to Westminster Abbey is at 3:30pm, so if you intend to go inside, make sure to arrive before that time.
From the Abbey you can walk to Buckingham Palace. In the summer months it is possible to go inside the Palace, but you will need tickets in advance. In other months, or if you prefer not to go inside, you can enjoy watching the guards and explore the parks nearby.
If you’re thirsty after all that sightseeing, you can grab a pint nearby at the Bag o’ Nails pub. Of course, there are many fine pubs throughout London, but this one has cute floral decor outside and is convenient to visit after Buckingham Palace.
At this point you’re free to spend the rest of the night however you’d like – have some dinner, visit another pub (or two), or get caught up on sleep. The next morning after you’ve had breakfast at your hotel, you can pop back out to visit a museum or check out one of London’s trendiest neighborhoods. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, you might want to visit King’s Cross Station to see the iconic Platform 9 3/4 and look for souvenirs in the Harry Potter shop.
Final Thoughts
This itinerary is meant to give you just a taste of what London can offer, but of course there’s much more to see and do. From London, you can take the train to Edinburgh or Paris or take a cheap flight to just about anywhere! It’s the perfect place to start or end a European vacation.
